EU AI Companion: Tutorial

Show an "AI Generated" badge on products that use AI-generated content, only to visitors in the European Union. Setup takes about two minutes and needs no theme code.

1. Turn the badge on (or off)

  1. Install the app and choose a plan. Free covers 25 products; Standard and Pro have a 7-day free trial.
  2. On the app home, click Enable in Theme Editor. The Theme Editor opens with the EU AI Companion embed switched on.
  3. Click Save in the top right.

To turn it off: Online Store > Themes > Customize > App embeds (left sidebar) > switch off EU AI Companion > Save. The badge disappears from your store immediately.

2. Choose which products show the badge

Add the tag EU-AI-Generated to any product that uses AI-generated images, descriptions or models: Products > open a product > Tags. To tag many products at once, select them in the product list and use More actions > Add tags. Remove the tag to stop showing the badge.

On Standard and Pro you can say what was made with AI. Use one or more specific tags instead of (or as well as) EU-AI-Generated: EU-AI-Text (product text), EU-AI-Model (models or people), EU-AI-Background (backgrounds), EU-AI-Visual (other visual elements) and EU-AI-Audio (audio or voice). The badge then shows the details in a tooltip, and the product page includes them as machine-readable data (JSON-LD). On Free, every tag shows the standard badge.

In the Theme Editor, open App embeds and click EU AI Companion to expand its settings:

4. Check it on your store

Outside the EU you won't see the badge by default. On the app home, click Debug badge on my store. Your store opens in a new tab in debug mode, and a panel on each product page shows your real signals (location, time zone, language), lets you simulate a visitor from somewhere else, and explains whether the badge shows and why. The tab stays in debug mode until you close it or click Exit. Visitors never see any of this, and it isn't counted in your stats. If your store has a password, enter it in the new tab; debug mode stays on.

5. Badge activity and disclosure report (Pro)

On Pro, the app home shows product views, EU views of tagged products, badges shown and the show rate, per country, for the last 30 days. Counts include only visitors who allowed analytics in your store's cookie banner. Pro also includes a CSV report of every product with a disclosure tag, what it discloses and whether it shows the badge.

Plans

If you tag more products than your plan covers, products that already show the badge keep it, and the app home lists the ones that don't. When a place frees up (you remove a tag or upgrade), the oldest waiting product gets it. If you move to a smaller plan, the most recently created products lose the badge first. Nothing is deleted when you change plans.

FAQ

Who sees the badge?

Visitors in the 27 EU member states (as determined by the location check below), on products with a disclosure tag such as EU-AI-Generated, while the app embed is on and the product is within your plan's product limit.

How is the visitor's location determined?

By Cloudflare's edge network, from the connection's country. IP addresses are never stored. If that check is blocked (e.g. by an ad blocker), the badge falls back to the browser's timezone and language.

Does it slow down my store or change my theme?

It's a small Shopify app embed: no theme files are edited, and uninstalling the app removes the badge.

Does it use cookies or collect personal data?

It sets no cookies and stores no personal data. The visitor's country is worked out from the connection, and the IP address is never stored. Anonymous, aggregated badge metrics are sent only when a visitor allows analytics. See the Privacy Policy.

The badge doesn't appear. What should I check?
